Gemini tackles Google Drive clutter: suggests folders but awaits confirmation
On June 1, 2026, Google moved Organize My Files from beta to general availability. Gemini can suggest sorting PDFs, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Microsoft Office files, images, videos with transcripts, and shortcuts into existing or new folders, but moves them only after confirmation. The feature is available in English for Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Google AI Pro and Ultra, Google AI Pro for Education, and AI Expanded Access with Workspace smart features enabled.

Previously, the Gemini side panel in Google Drive could create and move files, but Google disabled that mode on April 20, 2026. Now Gemini works through the “Suggest file moves” button: on desktop, in My Drive or a specific folder, you can select suggestions, change the destination folder, and click “Move files” or “Create and move”. In Refine mode, Gemini accepts the prompt “Group these by year”, groups files by projects or meeting notes, changes the number of new folders, and shortens their names. You need editor access to the files. An incorrect move can be reversed with Undo, Ctrl+Z, or Command+Z, and Gemini will not suggest a rejected file-folder pair again for 30 days.
After Undo, the files return, while new folders created during the move remain.
