Every car will become autonomous: Musk agrees with Jensen Huang's forecast
On September 16, 2026, Elon Musk replied “Correct” to Jensen Huang's prediction that every car in the world will become autonomous. A day earlier, DogeDesigner posted a video from The All-In Podcast in which Huang said this. On January 5, 2026, NVIDIA released Alpamayo, an open family of models, simulators, and datasets for Level 4 vehicles.

@elonmusk
That's right.
Great conversation with @chamath, @jason, @davidsacks, and @friedberg on all the work ahead when it comes to diffusing benefits of AI broadly, earning permission from communities, and ensuring AI safety and control.

Autonomous driving remained a collection of separate pilots and company promises. On January 5, 2026, NVIDIA opened Alpamayo for Level 4 vehicle development.
Now. NVIDIA and Uber plan to deploy a fully autonomous fleet in 28 cities across four continents by 2028. The first launch in Los Angeles and San Francisco is scheduled for the first half of 2027.
Alpamayo 1 is a VLA model with 10 billion parameters. NVIDIA published its weights and launch scripts on Hugging Face. The Physical AI dataset contains 1727 hours of driving from 25 countries and more than 2500 cities, split into 310,895 twenty-second clips.
Getting started. Alpamayo is not run directly in a vehicle. NVIDIA calls it a teacher model: it is fine-tuned or distilled into models that run inside the car.
To get started, NVIDIA recommends creating an environment with `uv venv`, running `uv sync --active`, requesting access to gated Hugging Face resources, and completing `hf auth login`. AlpaSim is deployed locally on one GPU with `uv run alpasim_wizard deploy=local topology=1gpu`, and results are saved to the specified log directory.
The next verifiable milestone is the launch of the NVIDIA and Uber autonomous fleet in Los Angeles and San Francisco in the first half of 2027.
