Major UK AI hub awaits power until the 2030s: project needs 90 MW
The Nscale project in Loughton will not launch in 2027: on Sep 24, The Guardian reported that the required power may not be supplied until early or mid-2030s. The site requests up to 90 MW, roughly the consumption of 315,000 homes.
In January 2025, Nscale planned to bring 50 MW online in Loughton in the fourth quarter of 2026, then increase capacity to 90 MW. The site was intended to host up to 45,000 NVIDIA GB200 GPUs.
Queue for the grid. Ofgem reported 315 data centers awaiting connection, with combined demand of 73 GW. Peak demand across the country is 45 GW.
Nscale is exploring local power generation and ways to speed up its grid connection.
