OpenAI closes in on Anthropic in spending: share rises from 10% to 24%
Over the two months leading up to Sep 24, OpenAI's share of spending through Vercel AI Gateway rose from 10% to 24%. Anthropic is still first, but its share fell from 69% to 40%. OpenAI already leads in token volume and accounts for 62% of image generations.

Anthropic previously captured nearly seven out of every ten dollars spent through Gateway. Now its share is four dollars out of ten, while OpenAI gained 14 points. Kimi K3 and DeepSeek took about half of Anthropic's losses, and Opus 5.5 reached 10% of spending in two days.
For agent workloads. GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6 Sol are driving spending up. In the GPT-5.6 family, Sol handles the flagship tier, Terra balances performance and cost, and Luna is built for fast, low-cost tasks. All three have a 1.05 million-token context window and up to 128,000 output tokens.
Gateway can be connected to a coding agent with `npx vercel@latest ai-gateway setup`. Logs show the model, provider, tokens, cost, duration, and routing attempts. Entries may take up to 90 seconds to appear.
The Gateway dashboard will continue to show spending, request counts, tokens, and time to first token by model, provider, and project.
