Lightspeed shifts its India bet to AI: a $250 million fund
As of Sep 24, Lightspeed had confirmed 80% of the $250 million target for its fifth India fund. On Apr 27, the fund filed an SEC form reporting zero sales and no investors. Lightspeed now plans to invest the money exclusively in AI companies in India and Southeast Asia.
In 2022, Lightspeed's previous fund raised $500 million and invested across different sectors in the region. The new fund is half the size and focused entirely on AI. Lightspeed's specialized funds have already deployed $900 million in the region, while its global funds added another $1.6 billion to the regional portfolio.
The cycle is shorter. For the first time, Lightspeed is synchronizing fundraising for its India fund with its global funds. Before launching the new fund, the company will make its final investments from the current one.
Lightspeed expects to begin investing from the new fund within two months and deploy it over 2.5 years.
