Copilot takes on desktop apps: computer use is available on macOS and Windows
Copilot can now carry out tasks in desktop apps through the CLI and the standalone GitHub Copilot app.
Since Oct 1, GitHub has offered computer use in public preview: an AI agent can interact with desktop apps on your behalf.
Beyond the terminal. The feature is available in GitHub Copilot CLI and the GitHub Copilot app on macOS and Windows. You can ask the same agent that handles your project tasks to work in other apps.
Computer Use had appeared in the CLI before. In version 1.0.85, released on Sep 16, GitHub fixed synchronization when switching via `/computer` and `/plugin`. The company is now offering the feature in public preview in both products.
Getting started with the CLI. On macOS, install it with `brew install --cask copilot-cli`; on Windows, use `winget install GitHub.Copilot`. After installation, run `copilot` in your project folder, enter `/login`, and sign in through GitHub.
You only need to sign in to the CLI the first time you run it.
