AI agents' file access on Mac is changing: Apple to tighten Full Disk Access controls
Apple promises additional controls for Full Disk Access in response to risks posed by AI agents.

An app with Full Disk Access can access messages and browser history, not just files in your project.
What will change. Users currently grant apps broad permission to access data on their Mac. Apple plans to add controls, citing new risks from the growing capabilities of AI agents.
An AI agent plans its own steps and calls tools to complete a task. According to Apple's documentation as of Oct 2, 2026, Full Disk Access covers data from Mail, Messages and Safari. The permission also extends to Home data, Time Machine backups and certain administrative settings for all users of the Mac.
Where to manage access. You can check and change the permission through Apple menu β System Settings β Privacy & Security β Full Disk Access. To add an app, click Add, select it and click Open.
