A warehouse humanoid works without barriers: Digit 5 sits down when a person approaches

Crouching here is not a gesture of politeness. A robot that can get down to the floor and freeze can work next to people without a cage around its work area.

Software instead of fencing. Digit 5 tracks people in a 360° radius and responds by going around a person, stopping, or sitting on the floor. Agility calls this a replacement for the physical barriers that have so far enclosed a robot’s work area.

“A robot must get into a statically stable pose and shut down its motors before a person can touch it,” says Agility co-founder Jonathan Hurst.

The knees turned around. On Digit 4 and early Cassie, they bent backward like a bird’s; on Digit 5, they bend forward like a human’s. That lets the new robot pick up a load directly from the floor, lift 22,7 kg instead of the previous 16, and place it at heights up to 2,2 m versus 1,68 m.

The battery lasts 90 minutes and recharges in 9 minutes. With Digit 4, every two hours of work required an hour at the charging station; with Digit 5, one minute goes to charging for every ten minutes of work. That means more than 20 hours on its feet per day.

The previous generation has already logged more than 65 000 hours in warehouses for GXO, Amazon, Toyota, and other customers, with accuracy of about 98%. At a GXO site, Digit 4 handled 100 000 totes.

There are no open sales: deployment requests are submitted through a form on the Agility website, and the company is planning its first sites in the EU, the UK, and Northern Ireland. Its order book exceeded $300 million in multi-year commitments as of May 2026, while net sales for 2025 were $1,8 million. The price of one robot is not disclosed.

Early-access customers will be able to test the promise of working without guardrails in the first half of 2027.
