AI giants' orders push AMD past a trillion: the company quadrupled in value in a year
AMD shares jumped 9% on September 21, pushing its market cap above $1 trillion for the first time in history.

AMD did not stay at a trillion for long: its market cap pulled back to $998 billion.
The milestone itself matters more than the daily pullback. A year ago AMD was worth about $254 billion; now it is $1,00 trillion, up 293,4% over the year. The shares gained 21% over five trading days.
They are paying for the future. The market is pricing not chips sold, but gigawatts signed. OpenAI will deploy 6 GW of AMD Instinct accelerators, Meta is taking up to 6 GW, and Anthropic up to 2 GW. The first gigawatt for OpenAI, powered by MI450 chips, comes online in the second half of 2026.
Anthropic is not just buying hardware. Claude will accelerate development of ROCm, AMD's software layer for its own accelerators, while AMD itself is ready to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic. In a year, some Claude queries will run on AMD chips rather than Nvidia's.
Not just promises. In the second quarter of 2026, AMD revenue grew 50% year over year to a record $11,5 billion. Data centers grew 107%, brought in $6,7 billion, and accounted for 58% of the company's total revenue.
Intel also grew over the same year, but is worth $643,74 billion. AMD is currently the smallest member of the trillion-dollar club, while Nvidia stands at $5,37 trillion.
The first gigawatts will not come online until late 2026 at the earliest, but the market already priced in a trillion on Monday.
The first gigawatt of AMD accelerators for OpenAI is promised for the second half of 2026; then it will become clear what the contract translates into in revenue.
