AI tutor enters the classroom: Gates Foundation puts up $400 million over two years
In a pilot across 21 schools, seventh-graders covered roughly 6 months more material during the school year than usual.
In Sierra Leone, 12 schools handed math over to an AI tutor for 8 weeks. The class covered as much as they normally would in 1.7 years.
The Gates Foundation built a program from pilots like these. On 14.09.2026, the foundation pledged at least $1 billion over two years for AI for schools, frontline health workers and farmers: 40% of the money goes to education, which is $400 million.
Second US pilot. The Kiddom Atlas add-on ran in 21 middle schools, and seventh-graders covered roughly 6 months more material than usual over the year. Teachers get diagnostics after every lesson, while AI builds personalized plans. Kiddom has been selling Atlas to schools since 20.02.2026.
Previously, school funding went to hardware: the US spent $30 billion replacing textbooks with laptops. Now it pays for what is inside: a companion that guides a student with leading questions instead of giving a ready-made answer.
Available now. Guided Learning from the Sierra Leone pilot lives in the regular Gemini app: Google opened the mode to all users for free on 06.08.2025, and it is enabled directly in the prompt box. Google gives teachers a separate link, which they post in Google Classroom.
It is not available everywhere. On 02.09.2026, New York introduced a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI for grades 2-K–8. It affects about 600,000 students, roughly two-thirds of the city system.
The foundation will close in 2045 and promises to help 10 million Americans earn an in-demand degree or certificate by then.
