Huawei chips will not go global: Ascend capacity is insufficient even for China
Chips will still go to select foreign customers, but Huawei has no plans for a major global market.
Huawei rotating chairman Eric Xu took the stage in Shanghai and settled the export question in a single sentence.
"Since we lack the capacity even to meet demand in China, we have no plan for a full-scale entry into the international market": that was Xu's answer on overseas Ascend sales at Huawei Connect on 18.09.2026 (Reuters).
The global market will not get a second major supplier of AI accelerators in the coming years. Everything Huawei can produce is being taken by Chinese customers.
The doors are not locked. Limited supplies to select foreign clients will continue, just without plans for full-scale expansion (iXBT, 21.09.2026).
**Within China, the roadmap has moved faster.** A year ago, at Huawei Connect 2025, the company scheduled Ascend 960 for Q4 2027. Now Ascend 960DT is set for Q1 2027, three quarters earlier, and 960PR for Q3 2027.
The roadmap then promises Ascend 970 in 2028 and Ascend 980 in 2029: a new generation every year.
The hardware has long moved beyond demos: more than 1 000 Ascend 910C systems have been deployed, and over 40 models have been pretrained natively on these chips.
Ascend 950DT launches in Q4 2026, and Chinese model developers will begin training on it in 2027.
