AI to Take Control of Probe: AstroForge Puts Model on Autonomy-1
On September 22, AstroForge announced that a small transformer model will be tasked with controlling the Autonomy-1 space probe. The craft will make decisions during flight.
Previously, Brokkr-1 waited for manual commands from Earth. After this mission, AstroForge added automated sequences for critical systems and solar panels.
Now the company entrusts AI not with individual sequences, but with control of the spacecraft. For a mining probe, this is needed to refine its target based on observations and approach the asteroid without losing sight of it.
DeepSpace-2 is scheduled to launch in the IV quarter of 2026.
