Air traffic controllers near Washington will see delays in advance: SMART brought together 200 data streams
On September 21, 2026, the FAA launched SMART at three airports near Washington. The platform brings together 200 data streams, from weather to flight trajectories and controller workloads.
**One console instead of a scatter of systems.** Previously, controllers kept data in different systems and cross-checked it across numerous screens and spreadsheets. Now, SMART and FMDS bring it together in one platform and generate forecasts for days, weeks, and months ahead. FAA staff review SMART's recommendations, and the manager of the local center can accept or reject them.
The FAA plans to gradually expand SMART to other US regions.
