YouTube picks thumbnails for each viewer: Dynamic Thumbnails tests 3 variants
On 23 September, YouTube introduced Dynamic Thumbnails: the creator uploads up to 3 thumbnails, and the service selects an option for different audience segments. Ask Studio already recommends what to change in a video draft before publishing, while the conversational editor assembles a first cut of Shorts from a prompt.
Since 2024, creators have run A/B tests of titles and thumbnails themselves, doing so more than 40 million times. Now YouTube handles thumbnail selection and adds viewer-retention advice before publishing.
How it works. Ask Studio opens in YouTube Studio on desktop: you can upload a draft, private, or unlisted video and ask what to fix. You can attach up to 10 images to a prompt, and for longer videos, since July 2026 the service generates a thumbnail and changes its colors and layout in chat.
In 2027, YouTube plans to give Shorts creators A/B testing for up to 3 different edits of a single video.
