Three of the largest publishers quietly let AI into covers and blurbs: no disclosure, no author consent
Language models are in use at HarperCollins, Hachette and Simon & Schuster: they write PR copy, cover text, back-cover blurbs and letters to literary agents, per a WIRED investigation of Oct 9, 2026. There is no public disclosure, and no author consent either.

Staff at three publishers told WIRED that AI is entering everyday work. HarperCollins senior management bought Claude licenses from Anthropic. Dozens of junior and senior employees have been named “AI Champions”: at monthly brainstorming sessions, they look for more places to apply the models.
Pushed from the top. At Simon & Schuster, OpenAI ran a workshop and recommended ChatGPT to staff. Managers push junior employees to promote the technology internally, and some workers are unhappy about it.
The publishers have not made any public disclosure yet.
