Character.AI files for bankruptcy, owing Google $4.1M
[Character.AI](/tools/character-ai) has filed for bankruptcy, and its largest creditor is Google, owed $4.1 million. In September the company had 86 full-time employees, and 66 of them moved to Disney, the lead bidder for the assets, before the filing. The company gives its reason this way: building AI entertainment turned out to be expensive, and together with legal risks the business cannot hold up in its current form.
