Recurring tasks in Gemini can now be turned into skills, which replace gems
Google replaces gems in Gemini with skills, reusable instructions for recurring tasks. The announcement was published Oct 12, 2026.
The instruction you keep rewriting in Gemini can now be saved as a skill and run again. Google explicitly calls skills the replacement for gems.
Why it matters. Google frames the goal of the announcement as automating the most repetitive tasks. A prompt you keep rewriting over and over lives in one place.
Gems are going away, and skills are becoming the main way to store recurring instructions.
