AI Data Centers Need $3.5 Trillion in Annual Revenue to Pay Off: Over 10% of US GDP

Professor Van Nieuwerburgh of the Brookings Institution estimates that paying for AI data centers and their debt requires about $3.5 trillion in revenue a year. OpenAI's revenue at the end of September 2026 runs at about $50 billion a year, roughly 70 times less.
