- The graph is built on the open Semantic Scholar corpus; paper similarity is calculated from shared references and co-citation, with similar articles pulled into clusters through a force layout.
- The free plan is limited to 5 new graphs per month, followed by paid plans for academia and business (connectedpapers.com, checked Aug 19, 2026).
- The project launched in 2020; its creators are Alex Tarnavsky, Eddie Smolyansky, and Itai Knaan Harpaz (Israel).
- July 2022: the service introduced paid accounts and graphs across several seed articles at once (Connected Papers blog).
