Facts
- The company was founded in Lisbon in 2013; it grew by combining machine translation with human editing.
- November 2024: launch of standalone product Widn.AI on its own TowerLLM model, translating into 32 languages without human involvement (CNBC, Nov 13, 2024).
- On August 22, 2025, US-based TransPerfect acquired Unbabel's key AI assets, including TowerLLM and the COMET quality metric; the amount was not disclosed (TransPerfect press release).
- In the first quarter of 2025, PDF document translation was added to the platform, with output in PDF or Word (unbabel.com release notes).
