Open models accounted for 78.4% of Vercel tokens: the day could set a record
On 19 September 2026, open models accounted for 78.4% of token volume in Vercel AI Gateway. Closed models received 21.6%. Moonshot AI and DeepSeek lead in spending, and together with Z.ai they surpassed OpenAI, which took 2nd place.

It looks like today may be a record day for the share of open models in Vercel AI Gateway token volume: 🟦 Open 78.4% 🟨 Closed 21.6% While spending 💲 usually tells a different story, Moonshot AI and DeepSeek are in 3rd and 4th place today. Add Z.ai, and their combined spending exceeds OpenAI's, which is in 2nd place. Note that this is spending on model inference through providers, mostly in the US, not revenue that goes directly to labs with open weights.
