ChatGPT Logs Sought for Court Disclosure: Lawsuit Filed After School Attack on 21 September
On September 21, British Columbia and School District No. 59 filed a lawsuit in a California court against OpenAI and Sam Altman, seeking the immediate disclosure of ChatGPT logs from a user connected to the school attack. The plaintiffs allege eight grounds for liability and seek compensation for replacing the school, emergency services, support for victims, and continued education.
OpenAI told AP on February 26 that the user's first account was closed in June 2025, but they returned with a second one.
The plaintiffs now seek to require ChatGPT to reliably block repeat accounts, identify threats, and provide law enforcement with conversations containing a credible threat of serious harm. The lawsuit also demands that the service refuse to continue conversations about violence, weapons, and explosives, even when the request is framed as fiction or research.
After receiving the logs, the plaintiffs intend to amend the lawsuit.
