Google's AI answer payouts are small: some sites receive less than 0.1% of ad revenue
According to The Information's Sep 29 report, several small and midsize sites receive less than 0.1% of their advertising revenue from Google.
Google pays roughly 100 publishers for contributions to AI answers. The AI contribution pilot covers Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode.
From promises to payments. On Jun 18, Google announced a pilot with sites outside the news sector: the company uses their content to ground answers in current facts. By Sep 14, participants could already see their monthly earnings and payment history in Search Console, according to Digiday. Google pays for meaningful content contributions to an answer, rather than the number of times the content is used.
How to join. Selected publishers see an AI contribution pilot screen in Search Console with a Get started button. The program is available to a limited number of sites, according to Search Engine Land's Sep 14 report. Once they join, an earnings widget appears, but it does not provide a detailed breakdown of how payments are calculated.
