AI agents recover from failures: Restate keeps a log of completed steps
Restate raised $20 million for infrastructure that helps AI agents keep working after failures.
Replit moved Replit Agent execution to Restate. According to Restate as of Sep 30, the new architecture uses more than 10 times as many durable actions as the previous generation.
Resuming after a failure. Restate keeps a log of completed steps. In the official Pydantic AI example, the agent uses this log to resume work. This is infrastructure for your own agent, rather than a standalone vibe coding chat.
Restate was founded by former members of the Apache Flink team. The company competes with Temporal to run multistep tasks. Singular led the Series A round, joined by Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures.
Ready-made agent template. Running locally requires the Server and CLI: `brew install restatedev/tap/restate-server restatedev/tap/restate`. The `restate-server` command starts the server, and the interface is available at `localhost:9070`.
Create a Vercel AI SDK template with `restate example typescript-vercel-ai-template`. In the project directory, run `npm install`, set `OPENAI_API_KEY`, and run `npm run dev`. The template requires Node.js 20 or later.
Register the service at `localhost:9080` through the Restate interface, then invoke the agent in Playground. When running through Docker, the registration address changes to `host.docker.internal:9080`. A RestateAgent wrapper is available for an existing Pydantic AI agent; install the dependencies with `uv add restate_sdk[serde] pydantic-ai`.
Restate Cloud charges for actions, rather than agent messages. One durable function call consumes 2 actions plus intermediate actions. Pricing as of Sep 30:

DOSS replaced its previous BullMQ task execution setup with a system built on Restate. The company uses it for enterprise workflows and nested tasks. According to Restate, DOSS improved latency, failure handling, and execution observability.

Restate's previous publicly announced funding round raised $7 million in June 2024 and coincided with the release of Restate 1.0.
