Claude Code context usage after every turn: Token Weather mod shows the percentage
Token Weather adds a context window usage indicator above the prompt, showing how much space files and conversation have taken up.

I made a mod for Claude Code that shows how full your context window is, like a weather forecast.

In a test on Oct 1, reading files over 3 turns increased context window usage from 18% to 81%. Token Weather updated the indicator after each turn.
The built-in Claude Code warning showed 90% in this test: it measures usage relative to the threshold for automatic context compaction. Token Weather shows usage as a share of the full window. On Claude Haiku 4.5, with a 200,000-token window, an intermediate reading was 67%.
Context at a glance. Token Weather is an add-on for the AI coding agent in the interactive terminal. Above the prompt, it shows the usage percentage, the number of tokens used and the window size. A chart covers the last 12 turns, while a separate indicator shows the change during the latest turn.
The mod maps usage to a weather scale:
- Below 25%: Clear, clear skies. - 25–49%: Cloudy, cloudy skies. - 50–74%: Showers, rain. - 75–89%: Storm, stormy weather. - From 90%: Compact soon, context compaction is approaching.
Launch for a session. The ready-to-use mod is in Anthropic's claude-code-playground repository. It requires Claude Code 2.1.287 or later; mods support is enabled by default. Check your version with `claude --version`.
To install and validate it from the terminal:
```sh git clone https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code-playground.git cd claude-code-playground/claude-code/mods claude plugin validate ./token-weather claude --plugin-dir ./token-weather ```
For a persistent installation, run two commands from the same directory:
```sh claude plugin marketplace add ./ claude plugin install token-weather@claude-code-playground-mods --scope user ```
In an existing session, load plugins with `/reload-plugins`. Addy Osmani described another route: launch `claude`, paste the full Token Weather prompt from his guide and allow hot reload. The mod appears once the turn ends.
The mods interface does not appear in the VS Code extension's chat panel, `claude -p` mode or the Agent SDK. The visual indicator works in the interactive terminal.
Primary sources: the Token Weather README on Anthropic's GitHub, Anthropic documentation and Addy Osmani's guide on claude.dev, Oct 1, 2026.
Token Weather reads actual usage metrics, including cached input tokens, through `$.session.usage()`, without calling the model or making a separate token-counting request.
