DESIGN.md in shadcn: agent builds a design system from one file in seven steps
On Oct 9, 2026, PR #12252 merged a DESIGN.md workflow into the shadcn skills. The agent picks a preset, installs all components and restyles them to match the design system in a seven-step workflow.

Alright, I made the shadcn/ui skills genuinely good in DESIGN.md. Ask for a design system, and it picks a preset, then builds everything: colors, tokens, the type scale, elevation, and primitive and block styles. Start with a solid foundation and build something unique.

Give the agent a design-system task, and it picks a preset itself and assembles colors, tokens, a type scale and component styles. **What the agent reads.** From DESIGN.md it takes the colors, typography, rounded, spacing and components fields, plus the text of the “Do's and Don'ts”, “Iteration Guide” and “Known Gaps” sections. Tokens map onto shadcn variables and are edited only in the Tailwind CSS file, and cva variant names are preserved. **How to install.** Install the skill with pnpm dlx skills add shadcn/ui. It activates on its own if the project has components.json. A new project starts from a preset with npx shadcn@latest init --preset <code> --template vite --no-monorepo -y. In an existing project, the preset is applied with npx shadcn@latest apply <code> --only theme, font. Before handing off, the workflow runs typecheck itself, checks the console, verifies there is no horizontal scroll at 375 and 1280 pixels, and toggles dark mode. The report lists every color pair with contrast below 4.5:1.
Of the skill's six presets, only three have their style described: vega, maia and lyra.
