It answers one question: what language your recordings are in. Latin script, and Descript saves editing hours; Russian speech, and it simply will not transcribe it.

Of six common requests to Yandex, Descript handles five, but not the most painful one: Russian speech.

Who it is for. For people running an English-language podcast or channel who edit speech, not images: interviews, lectures, webinars, talking heads. Delete a bad take in the text, and it disappears from the video; guests record inside Rooms, up to ten people in 4K.

Who else. For teams that need editing as a pipeline: Underlord assembles a draft on request, and since May 2026 the same actions can run from Claude, ChatGPT, or your own code through the API. The learning curve is low, with a 4.4 out of 5 ease-of-use score on Capterra (07.09.2026).

Who it is not for. For people with Russian recordings: transcription works only for Latin-script languages, and the vendor says in its Help Center that Russian is «not yet supported». Also not for people who edit films visually rather than by speech: there is no Premiere-level color grading or graphics, and the timeline, according to the Style Factory review of 03.03.2026, is more limited and clumsier.

Three tiers: free text-based editing, credit-powered tools, and an agent that spends credits with every message.

Text-based editing. Upload a file or record directly in the app and get a transcript, «in seconds» according to the vendor. Then «deleting a word deletes that moment of video and moving a sentence moves the footage with it», as the homepage explains, while the timeline remains for fine adjustments. The Style Factory review of 03.03.2026 calls this work «at the level of ideas and sentences, not clips and tracks».

Underlord. An editing agent in the editor's right panel: ask it «hide cuts with zooms» or «cut a one-minute trailer from the webinar», and it does so and shows a list of edits. The vendor calls this «vibe editing»; the model underneath is selected from a list, from Claude to GPT and Gemini, with the full list in the answers below. Underlord is still beta in the Help Center, and the vendor candidly says the agent «may overpromise, make incorrect assumptions» and does not edit in the background while you record.

Voice. Clone your voice «in 60 seconds», then fix a typo in a recording by typing, while Regenerate matches both audio and lip movement. The name Overdub has disappeared from the site; it is now AI voices. Consent for a clone is read aloud in English, the model is built on American pronunciation, and someone else's voice is prohibited by the agreement.

Audio. Studio Sound removes noise and echo in one click, for no more than 30 credits per file. Filler words are removed in batches, only in English according to Help, and since the 05.08.2026 release also in Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, and Italian.

Video and recording. Eye Contact turns your gaze toward the camera, while Green Screen removes the background without a green backdrop. Rooms records up to ten guests in 4K, and an hour-long session with five people deducts 60 minutes, not 300.

Translation and dubbing. Subtitles translate into 65 languages, while stock-voice dubbing is claimed for 26; Russian appears on both Help lists. A caveat: Russian is absent from the text-to-speech list used for dubbing, and we have not tested it live. Enhanced dubbing voices on the Business plan do not include Russian.

Russian. Transcription works only for Latin-script languages; the vendor calls Russian, Chinese, and Japanese «not yet supported» (Help, 07.09.2026). Without transcription, text-based editing cannot start, and importing a ready transcript is English-only too. The interface and all 407 Help articles are in English.

Requests for Russian. The vendor's feature request for non-Latin languages has collected 399 votes; the Russian request has been there since 21.02.2025, with no timeline response. Five years ago, a Pikabu author wrote the same thing, «the program does not recognize Russian speech», and nothing has changed since.

From code and Claude. Since 2026, Descript has had an API in open beta, an npm command line, and a remote MCP server with connectors in the Claude and ChatGPT directories. They let you import a file by link and run any Underlord action; the API still cannot download a finished video without publishing it to a web page.

What the vendor itself shows. The header video comes from the descript.com homepage: on the left is an editor window with a transcript and clip strip, and on the right is an Underlord card that, after «Edit this for me», removes duplicate takes and pauses, then adds zooms, creates a German copy with an avatar, and makes a one-minute vertical cut. This is the vendor's illustrated demo, not a screen recording, so its agent claims are not treated as facts; the stills above show what the real window looks like. We did not run Descript for this task; figures come from Help, the pricing page, changelog, and third-party reviews.

It installs in a minute on Mac or Windows, but the first question is not «where do I download it?» but what language your recording is in.

Step 1. Check the language of the material. Transcription is available only for Latin-script languages, from English and Spanish to Polish and Turkish; Russian is not on the list, so a Russian recording will upload and deduct minutes but get no text. Russian is only available as a translation language: subtitles and dubbing for a finished English video.

Step 2. Create an account at web.descript.com with Google, Apple, or email; no card is required for the free plan, and there is no «country» field at signup. The full editor works in a browser on Chrome or Edge; the vendor does not promise Safari and does not support Firefox.

Step 3. To record your screen and handle heavy projects, download the app from descript.com/download: macOS 14 or Windows 11, at least 8 GB of memory, 16 recommended, and 20 GB of disk space for cache. Projects live in the vendor's cloud; there is no offline mode. Current version 2.21.1 (28.08.2026), the app updates itself.

Mobile. There is no app: the vendor says mobile browsers and tablets are not officially supported. Searches for “download Descript on Android” lead nowhere, while the App Store has six apps from unrelated publishers called “Descript AI.”

From Russia. The site, web app, help center, CDN, installer, and pricing page open: a 07.09.2026 test from a Moscow node returned code 200 for all six addresses, while api.openai.com returned 403 from that same node and linkedin.com did not open. Descript is not in the domain-blocking registry. We did not attempt a live sign-in from a Russian address and found no reports of being blocked.

Checkout. A Russian card does not work in Stripe, and the vendor writes that “due to restrictions from our payment processor,” the service may be unavailable in certain countries. The paid plan therefore international payment required.

Editors have no arenas or benchmarks, so the measurements here are about scale, demand, and reviews, not editing quality.

Scale. The pricing page said “More than 6 million creators & teams” on 07.09.2026; Amazon, Canva, and Salesforce appear on the homepage, all according to the vendor itself. The company raised $100 million, with its latest round led by the OpenAI Startup Fund in November 2022; The Information reported a valuation of about $550 million at the time. No newer rounds were found, and the vendor does not disclose revenue or headcount.

Reviews differ twofold. Trustpilot gives it 2,7 out of 5 from 283 reviews, 41 % of them one-star: expiring credits, words lost during processing, unpaid refunds. Capterra gives it 4,6 from 183 reviews and 4,4 for ease of use (07.09.2026). The most common demand tail is about language: “Descript in Russian” asks for exactly the one thing the product does not have.

Demand. “descript” is searched 1 487 times per month, the “neural network” tail gets 130, “download” 53, “overdub” 30, and “in Russian” with variants 18 (Wordstat, 07.09.2026). The product is not called by its Cyrillic name; “deskript” in suggestions from both search engines means descriptor, and Habr has not had a single article with the product's name in its title in eight years. The largest Russian video about it received 9 164 views in four years; its position among video tools is shown under the card title, and the full tool ranking is on the general page.

Entry is $24 per month for one seat, while the pricing page shows $16 because the default toggle is set to annual billing.

Media hours. They are charged when uploaded or recorded, “regardless of whether they’re transcribed,” according to the pricing FAQ. An image counts as one second, an hour-long Rooms recording with five guests costs 60 minutes, and reinserting an already uploaded file is free. Unused amounts expire every month.

Credits. Underlord, Studio Sound, filler words, voices, and generation use them; even a message in the agent chat costs a few credits. Credit pricing is published only as a maximum of 30 for Studio Sound and filler-word removal; everything else “depends on the size of the job,” so the monthly budget cannot be calculated in advance. Credits also expire every month.

Free. Free gives 60 media minutes per month, 100 credits once for the lifetime of the account, and 720p export with a corner watermark. One hour-long podcast uses the whole monthly allowance, while one audio cleanup can consume a third of the credits. It is an evening demo, not a working plan.

Plans. Hobbyist is $24 per month for 10 hours and 400 credits with 1080p export, Creator is $35 for 30 hours and 800 credits with 4K and top-ups, Business is $65 for 40 hours and 1 500 credits, and Enterprise is on request (pricing payload, 07.09.2026). The price is per seat: “2 Editors × $65 = $130/month,” as the vendor calculates. The cheapest hourly rate is on Creator, $1,17 monthly, not Business.

Top-ups. Only on Creator and Business: 5 hours for $25, 50 hours for $150, 350 credits for $35, 4 000 for $200. An extra hour costs about twice as much as an hour included in the plan, purchased extras live for a year and are non-refundable. Upgrading mid-month does not reset what has already been used; subscription refunds are available only within 48 hours of the billing date, and paid plans have no trial.

Quiet price increase. For three years, from 2021 to 2024, entry cost $12 annually and $15 monthly. In July 2024 the plans were renamed, the entry plan lost 4K export, in spring 2025 entry rose to $16 and $24, and Business from $40 to $50.

Currency change. In October 2025, transcription hours were replaced with media hours plus credits; legacy subscribers have been migrated since 17.11.2025, and the vendor warned that “some legacy prices could increase.” Bonus hours and credits disappeared from the pricing page by early August 2026.

From Russia. A Russian card does not work: checkout uses Stripe, Russia is absent from its country list, and Mastercard has not served Russian cards since 05.03.2022. Based on their own partner articles, intermediaries sell the subscription with a 10–20 % markup and no auto-renewal; we did not verify this. There is no ruble route through an app store because there is no app. The vendor's only discount, $12 monthly and $8 annually, is for students, educators, and nonprofits.

Three questions: what the vendor does with your recordings, who owns the voice clone, and why reviews of Descript differ twofold.

Data. The company is in the US and stores recordings in the US, with no region selection (privacy policy, version 14.04.2025). Projects are described as confidential, and people cannot access them without your request.

Training. Under the agreement, the vendor “may use your input and output to train its models unless you opt out”; opt-out is enabled in settings, while third-party model providers are prohibited from training on your data (Terms, version 25.02.2025). The vendor says differently on its security page, claiming all AI features are “opt-in,” but the agreement takes precedence, so we trust it.

Voice. A clone can only be made for your own voice or someone who read consent aloud; another person’s voice is prohibited by the agreement. Samples and synthesis may be heard by employees, contractors, and Amazon Mechanical Turk workers for misuse monitoring, while anonymized recordings enter the vendor’s research datasets. Voice models and face geometry are called sensitive data in the policy; we found no lawsuits or scandals around Descript clones.

Outages and breaches. There are no domain breaches in the Have I Been Pwned database and zero public vulnerabilities in the NVD registry (07.09.2026). According to the vendor’s status page, AI video is the most fragile area: 99,73 % for June-September 2026 versus 99,97 % for the web app, using the vendor’s own figures. On 20.05.2025, the app and web could not open projects for half an hour; on 27.05.2026, the Underlord chat returned errors for nearly four hours.

Reviews. Trustpilot shows 2,7 out of 5 from 283 reviews and 41 % one-star ratings: “the agent spends credits on edits I did not ask for,” “important words were removed,” and a promised refund never arrived. Capterra has 4,6 from 183, ease of use 4,4, support 4,3. G2 shows 4,6 from 837 reviews according to the vendor; its reviews page would not open for us.

Why the split. The two platforms attract different people. People go to Capterra through vendor invitations, often for compensation; they go to Trustpilot to complain.

What is under the hood. Transcription is handled by Rev and Whisper, voices ElevenLabs, and the rest is third-party too: avatars, models for Underlord from four providers, payments, and sign-in, as the vendor itself lists on its security page and in the changelog. Descript’s own models are for research, audio codec, and audio and lip regeneration.

The choice is not about who edits better, but two questions: what language is your recording in, and do you cut it with text or your finger on the timeline.

CapCut. ByteDance editor for phone, computer, and browser with hands-on timeline editing, templates, auto-captions, and a Russian interface; free, with Pro at 19,99 $ per month according to vendor billing (CapCut snapshot 05.09.2026). The access picture is the reverse: the CapCut website and desktop return code 451 to Russian nodes, while the mobile app remains in Russian stores; Descript is fully available from Russia, but has no mobile app. CapCut captions Russian speech; Descript does not transcribe it.

Riverside. The closest podcast neighbor: guest recording on separate tracks, text-based editing too, Pro at 29 $ monthly and 24 $ annually for 5 hours of recording per month (riverside.com, 07.09.2026, page marked staging). Practitioners unhappy with Descript’s tariff reshuffle in fall 2025 moved here specifically. We did not verify Russian transcription or payment from Russia.

The rest. Adobe Premiere Pro offers the same text-based editing within a 22,99 $ monthly subscription with an annual commitment and no hourly counter, but it is a large editor for people who edit by picture. There is no Russian editor where text editing cuts video: local services like Teamlogs and engine Yandex SpeechKit transcribe Russian speech, but do not edit by text, while the ClipCut clipping service admits in its own comparison table that it has no text-based editing.

Over nine years, this podcast editor from a Groupon co-founder grew into video, acquired a voice clone and a remote recording studio, received money from the OpenAI fund, replaced its founder with its head of product, and rebuilt its tariffs twice.
