Older GitHub Copilot models will be retired on October 19: GitHub names replacements
On October 19, 2026, GitHub will remove six models from all GitHub Copilot modes. Gemini 3.7 Flash, GPT-5.5, GPT-5.4, and three other models will be replaced. In Business and Enterprise, alternatives will be enabled automatically when the shared default model selection is active.
GitHub Copilot will stop accepting six models in chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completion. Before October 19, workflows and integrations must move to the new pairs: Gemini 3.7 Flash → Gemini 3.8 Flash, GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.4 → GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.4 mini and GPT-5 mini → GPT-5.6 Luna, Grok 4.5 → Grok 4.6.
For organizations. If shared default model selection is disabled, an administrator enables the alternatives via GitHub → Organizations → the relevant organization → Settings → Code, planning, and automation → Copilot → Models. The new models will then appear in the Copilot Chat list, and the old ones do not need to be removed separately. Copilot Free and Copilot Student use automatic model selection only.
After October 19, 2026, Copilot will select a model from the list available under the plan and the organization's policies.
