Long GitHub Copilot tasks will get shorter: Claude Opus 5.5 promises fewer steps
On September 22, 2026, Claude Opus 5.5 became available in GitHub Copilot for Pro+, Max, Business, and Enterprise. In VS Code, select the model in Copilot Chat via the model picker, and GitHub charges for usage according to its provider pricing list. Pro+ costs $39 per user per month, while Max costs $100 and includes $200 AI Credits.

Previously, Claude Opus 5 completed comparable tasks with more steps and tokens. In an early GitHub test, Opus 5.5 delivered the same result with fewer steps and tokens and recovered faster from errors in multi-step tasks.
Enabling it in the editor. In GitHub Copilot, select the model in Copilot Chat. The model is rolling out gradually: if it is not in the model picker, GitHub suggests checking again later.
In Business and Enterprise, an administrator manages access to Claude Opus 5.5 through model policy.
