Gemini Replaces Personal Assistants with Skills: Gems Move on Nov 17
On Nov 17, 2026, Google will start automatically migrating Gems to Gemini skills. You can use a Gem until it is migrated.
In Aug 2024, Gemini gave users Gems: personalized assistants with a name and instructions. At the same time, Google improved image generation with Imagen 3. Now, skills are invoked with `/` in a task, several can be enabled at once, and Gemini can select them based on context.
Build your own. In Gemini Spark, a skill is created via Skills → Create manually: it needs a name, description, and instructions. You’ll need a personal Google Account, be at least 18, have a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription, and Keep Activity enabled; a ready-made `SKILL.md` can be uploaded as a file or archive up to 100 MB.
After the migration, skills will become the primary way to build repeatable workflows in Gemini.
