AI Agents Will Be Able to Complete Purchases: Shopify Opens Checkout to Them
On Sep 28, Shopify let browser AI agents into checkout: they can modify order details and complete purchases after buyer confirmation. The agent gets four tools, including order updates and proceeding to payment.
**Previously, the agent stopped at the threshold.** The proceed_to_checkout tool only moved the buyer into checkout. Now the agent can modify order details and complete the purchase. WebMCP is already available in developer preview for Liquid storefronts and Hydrogen, with no installation or setup required.
The entire order changes. Before update_checkout, Shopify recommends retrieving the latest order and sending its full state: omitted fields are typically cleared. Before payment, the agent shows the buyer the order and total, then asks for permission again if the total changes.
Browser AI agent support is currently limited to Chromium browsers.
