GitHub Copilot agents take fewer steps: GPT-6.1 Sol is now available
On Sep 29, 2026, GPT-6.1 Sol became available in GitHub Copilot for agentic coding and terminal work. In early tests, the model completed multi-step tasks with fewer tokens and steps than GPT-6 and GPT-5.6. In the OpenAI API, one million input tokens cost $2, output tokens cost $10, and cached input costs $0.10.

📣 @OpenAIDevs GPT-6.1 Sol is now generally available in GitHub Copilot. You can use it for agentic coding and terminal workflows with strong multistep coding performance. In early testing, it reliably completed tasks while using noticeably fewer tokens and steps than earlier models in the GPT-6 and GPT-5.6 families. Try it out in the GitHub Copilot app, CLI, and @code. https://github.blog/changelog/2026-09-29-gpt-6-1-sol-in-github-copilot/

GitHub Copilot ran on earlier GPT-6 and GPT-5.6 family models. GPT-6.1 Sol is now available in the Copilot app, CLI, and @code.
Benchmarks improved. On DeepSWE v1.1, Sol matched GPT-6 Astra at roughly one-fifth of the cost and outperformed GPT-6 Sol by 6.4 percentage points. On AutomationBench with medium reasoning, the model outperformed Claude Opus 5.5 by 2.2 percentage points at roughly one-third of the cost.
With low reasoning, the share of answers containing a factual error fell from 11.4% for GPT-6 Sol to 7.7% for GPT-6.1 Sol. The model is also available to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, but not in regular Chat.
In the coming days, OpenAI promises GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast, with generation speeds in Codex up to 8 times faster than standard.
