Time to switch models in GitHub Copilot: 4 models deprecated
On Oct 2, 2026, GitHub deprecated 4 models across all Copilot modes, including chat and code completion.
In Copilot, changing the chat model does not change the code completion model. Suggestions as you type have a separate setting.
Which models to replace. GitHub scheduled the transition on Sep 3, 2026, and deprecated the models in GitHub Copilot on Oct 2. The decision covers Copilot Chat, code edits, ask and agent modes, and code completion.
GitHub recommends the following replacements:
- Gemini 3.5 Flash and Gemini 3.6 Flash: Gemini 3.8 Flash. - Kimi K2.7 Code: Kimi K3. - Claude Opus 4.7: Claude Opus 5.
How to switch models. In VS Code, open Copilot Chat using the icon in the window title bar. At the bottom of the chat, open CURRENT-MODEL and select the model you want.
In an organization with Copilot Business or Enterprise, an owner can enable the replacement through Organizations β organization β Settings β Copilot β Models β Enabled. The enterprise must allow changes to this setting.
GitHub's documentation lists VS Code v1.128.0 as the minimum for Claude Opus 5, while Kimi K3 requires v1.131 or later.
